As finals week creeps up on Alina Chernoff, so does stress and anxiety over final chemistry exams, multi-step projects, and course grades. Food Review: Heights Tavern
In the middle of Washington Heights, a few blocks from Columbia Presbyterian Children’s Hospital sits“TheBaroftheHood.”Locatedon164thStreet and Broadway on the uptown side with outdoor seating in great weather, and 2 bars inside with 13 TV, to watch four different games playing at the same time. This is where the doctors and medical students from Columbia Presbyterian come to relax and have a drink after work.
Taking advantage of the latest special Tiki Drinks that comes in a Tiki mug that you can take home for an extra $10 plus the price of the drink. They are cute and tropical-themed names like ” Flower from Pablo,’ ‘Just Got Lei’d,’ and ‘Fresh Sunburn.’ I had the ‘Beach, Please’ made with Ballast Point Fugu Jamaican Vodka, Cedilla Acai Liqueur and a splash of lime on the rocks in a tall glass, garnished with lemon for $12. It was tasty, light and slightly tart.
In the mood for a beer? Try either their 14 draft beers, like Stella or seasonal Sam Adams Summer Wit or try one of their 20 bottled beers that change seasonally, my favorite being the Moo Thunder, a creamy milk stout that is not too bitter for $6.
Although it does advertise as a sports bar with killer drinks, Heights Tavern also has some pretty good food, too. There are several appetizers and bar snacks that can become a meal. The beet salad with baby arugula, fresh medallions goat cheese, candied pecans, roasted beets with a coriander vinaigrette dressing, is delicious; I also added grilled shrimp for an additional $5. The HT Burger is their staple: a standard 8 oz ground all-beef patties cooked to order with lettuce, tomato, raw onion and pickles on a sesame seed bun, all orders come with either fries or salad, and, for an extra $2, you can have sweet potato fries.
It is a fun place to go with friends and enjoy a night out, not really a place to go if you are starving and are ready to start eating the moment you get there. The table services seriously lack the definition of service. The bartenders are on point, and they are the ones that steal the show. Kenya, Mellissa, Quentin, Luke and Crystal are the best. These guys really know your name by the end of a meal.
